7.3 Powerstroke Injector Upgrade – Tow Rig Tech EP3

7.3 Powerstroke Injector Upgrade with Single Shots

On this Episode of Tow Rig Tech we are upgrading the Injectors on our 300k mile 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel powered Super Duty. After this many miles you can rest assure that at least one of your injectors is worn out. The 7.3 powerstroke injector upgrade was inevitable. We called the guys up over at Full Force Diesel Performance in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and went with stage their Stage 1.5 380hp single shot injectors. The factory injectors are a split shot design. This quiets down the motor but wastes fuel due to the pilot shot. These are also the highest horsepower injectors they recommend you run with a stock transmission when towing. Since we do a lot of towing and haven’t built the trans yet we went with these.

The Install

The injector removal and install might seem like a massive undertaking but after watching this how to video you should be able to do the task in a weekend with normal hand tools. While we are in there we went ahead and replaced the glow plugs as well as the under cover harnesses and valve cover gaskets. Just like anytime working on a diesel truck it is a dirty job so be sure to head over to Tub o Towels and get you some Mechanic Wipes to clean up after this mess. We also discuss the infamous 50 cent mod and when you should or shouldn’t do it. This is the most involved install video we have ever done. Hopefully after watching it you will have a better understanding of whether or not you want to tackle the 7.3 powerstroke injector upgrade.

The Results

Once we got everything installed and tested for leaks we get to the fun part with some Burnouts and Full Throttle Launch modes on the Race Tune. This way you can see the results. Going from the stock 250 horsepower to 380 horsepower can really wake up a fifteen year old truck! What should we do next? Maybe upgrade the Transmission? Or throw some more power at it with an upgraded turbo. Stay tuned and find out!
